Not what I expected

Posted : 3 weeks, 3 days ago on 11 June 2008 07:06 (A review of You Don't Mess with the Zohan)

Well, I went into this film thinking it would either be very good or utter crap. I didn't see what I was expecting on either front. The majority of this film is very low brow physical humour, the majority of people will find it funny, but your modern film enthusiast will not appreciate it on the level worth going to the theatre for. Certainly worth renting or downloading, but don't pay the $10 ticket fee (or at least do as I did and pay $7 for a seniors ticket, they don't check). I did however find one point about it that made me really enjoy it. The story follows an Israeli assassin who is fed up with the ongoing conflict in his country. As such, the movie is peppered with delightful political humour relative to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. If you're a political science student at all, or even studied major historical events of the 20th century then you will likely find some great moments mixed in to this film. My Friends and I found that made it worth watching, but I will grant that a lot of people will not.

A little too much focus on weapons

Posted : 2 months, 1 week ago on 27 April 2008 03:24 (A review of Mario Kart Wii)

Overall I'm not disappointed, as I've yet to be from any of the Mario Kart series. It delivers the game play fans look for while carefully adding new features to enhance that game play without alienating older fans. My only qualm with this game really is that with so many weapons, many a little more powerful than need be, it takes away from a need for driving skills. A player can take every turn flawlessly and hit just the right sequence of jumps on the straight-aways, but if an opponent gets a lucky string of items or sets one off while you're in mid air you can quickly lose what ever lead you may have had. I'd like to see more focus on the skill based items and timing rather than heavy hitters that can't fail.

Never the less, still a worthy purchase.

What a way to spend a quarter of an hour

Posted : 9 months, 3 weeks ago on 14 September 2007 11:32 (A review of Isle of Flowers)

If you can get a hold of a copy of this film I'd highly recomend it. Worse case scenario, you don't like it and you're out 13 minutes. Best case scenario you love it and you're glad you saw it. The narative is vaguely reminicent of Hitch Hikers Guide (The BBC Miniseries) as are some of the visual effects. Some will find it depressing, others inspiring, dramatic, tragic, comical.

Absolute Classic (Simon's Quest)

Posted : 10 months ago on 3 September 2007 02:30 (A review of Castlevania II: Simon's Quest)

Simon's Quest is one of my favorite games by far. This is what interested me in the Castlevania series. The story is interesting the levels are challenging and the hero is iconic. It is one of the first fantasy games where the hero doesn't use a sword. The gameplay mixes an RPG system of levels and equipment with adventure style movements and platform maps. A great piece of an excelent series

Hidden Treasure (Metroid Fusion)

Posted : 10 months ago on 3 September 2007 02:00 (A review of Metroid Fusion)

This was one of the first games I got for my GBA and I've had more fun playing it than most of the others. Like the previous metroids it begins by rendering samus without the use of most of her equipment and therefore unable to access certain areas of the map. As you journey through the space station you uncover a plot that adds new depth to the ongoing story of the metroid series. The gameplay is smooth, the graphics are a match for the system and story keeps your interest from start to finish. A great way to pass a few hours, whether it's your first time playing it through or your sixth.
